More Than a Lick of Paint
How one exchange unlocked value far beyond the resources themselves.

The Opportunity
When Summit Learning Trust joined Education Exchange WM's school transformation programme, the focus was on creating an improved learning environment for pupils and staff.
Alongside the refurbishment, another opportunity emerged.
As a member of the Community RePaint network and an official supplier of ReColour remanufactured paint, RE(YOU)S was able to coordinate the supply of remanufactured paint for the project. At the same time, Summit Learning Trust had surplus laptops that were no longer required.
Rather than treating these as two separate transactions, RE(YOU)S connected the opportunity.
The school received remanufactured paint to refresh its learning environment, while the unused laptops entered the RE(YOU)S resource-sharing ecosystem, where they could be assessed, prepared and redistributed for continued community use.
What began as an exchange of resources became an opportunity to create value in multiple directions.
Creating Value Through Exchange
The project demonstrated that value doesn't always come from buying something new. Often, it comes from recognising the value that already exists and creating the right connections.
The remanufactured paint continued its journey by transforming a school environment rather than becoming waste.
The surplus laptops began a new journey, creating future opportunities for digital inclusion within the community.
Neither resource had reached the end of its usefulness. They needed the right destination.
By connecting organisations with different resources, needs and expertise, RE(YOU)S enabled both resources to continue creating environmental, social and economic value beyond their original purpose.
The exchange didn't simply move resources from one organisation to another. It unlocked new value from resources that already existed.
Environmental Value
The project extended the life of multiple resources.
The paint used in the refurbishment had already been diverted from the waste stream through the Community RePaint network, where surplus paint is collected, remanufactured into ReColour paint and returned to use rather than being disposed of. By choosing remanufactured paint, the project not only reduced demand for newly manufactured paint but also gave a recovered resource a further life.
At the same time, surplus laptops that were no longer required by the school entered the RE(YOU)S resource-sharing ecosystem, where they could be assessed, prepared and redistributed for continued community use, reducing unnecessary electronic waste.
Together, the exchange demonstrated how different resource streams can be kept in circulation, creating environmental value by extending the life of materials that might otherwise have been lost.
Social Value
The refurbishment created welcoming learning environments for pupils, staff and the wider school community, providing spaces that support learning, wellbeing and everyday school life.
Beyond the school, the surplus laptops entering the RE(YOU)S ecosystem created opportunities for individuals, families and community organisations to access digital technology that could support learning, employment and community participation.
The project also strengthened relationships between businesses, education and the voluntary and community sector. By bringing together different skills, resources and perspectives around a shared purpose, the collaboration demonstrated how lasting social value can be created through partnership, with benefits extending well beyond a single project.
The relationships developed through the project created the conditions for both resources and the people connected to them to continue creating opportunities.
Economic Value

The organisations involved recognised the potential of the resources they already held and worked together to maximise their use. The remanufactured paint supported the refurbishment of a school environment, while the surplus laptops entered the RE(YOU)S ecosystem to be prepared for continued community use. Reflection
What began as an exchange of remanufactured paint and surplus laptops has grown into an ongoing partnership.
The relationships developed through this project have continued beyond the initial exchange, with RE(YOU)S working alongside Education Exchange WM and Summit Learning Trust to support future school transformation projects.
The project demonstrates how connected relationships enable resources, knowledge and opportunities to continue flowing between organisations and communities over time. As those connections grow, so does the potential to create lasting environmental, social and economic value..
